anchormen

‘President Lyndon B. Johnson was heard to observe that once he’d lost Walter Cronkite, he’d lost the American electorate, as well. And he’d lost the war’ (Tom Shales – Washington Post).

Zoals geschiedde.

I like what you wrote about Walter Cronkite, Piet- and I think he would have liked it too- that thoughts of him brought to mind the “we’re mad as hell….and we aren’t going to take it anymore” dialogue from the movie Network….he would have liked this for certain

found this quote of Cronkite (1998, once retired he still had lots of social and political activities):
“We know that unilateral action in Grenada and Tripoli was wrong. We know that Star Wars means uncontrollable escalation of the arms race. We know that the real threat to democracy is half a nation in poverty. … We know that religious beliefs cannot define patriotism. … God Almighty, we’ve got to shout these truths in which we believe from the housetops. Like that scene in the movie ‘Network,’ we’ve got to throw open our windows and shout these truths to the streets and the heavens. And I bet we’ll find more windows are thrown open to join the chorus than we’d ever dreamed possible.”

so I think you’re right on him liking the link to Beale…

I did not write too much about Cronkite, the quote is from Tom Shales, about Beale I say that though they’d might share opinions, Cronkite had a rather diplomatic approach. (used the honey instead of the vinegar to catch the fly)
